Valentine’s Day Gift Dilemma? Here Are a Half Dozen Ideas to Inspire You

February is here, and that means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. If you’re wondering what that has to do with insurance, consider this: about half of all engagements in the U.S. take place on Valentine’s Day – that’s a lot of expensive rings that probably aren’t covered by homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policies. And that doesn’t take into account any of the other gifts of jewelry or other expensive items exchanged between couples on this special day.

BasiThe typical homeowner, condo or renter insurance policy doesn’t offer additional coverage for most expensive items like jewelry, antiques, firearms or other big-ticket items. So finding out about insurance needs – and having that extra insurance in place ahead of time – is important for making sure your gift is safe and protected from the moment you give it.

Additional coverage costs just a few dollars extra per year, and it can provide immeasurable peace of mind – not to mention an extra thoughtful touch for your gift.

And if you have a child who’s just moved into his or her first apartment, consider the gift of renter’s insurance to provide that same peace of mind for all their belongings. Let’s face it: just because your child is on their own, that doesn’t mean you stop worrying about them. Providing a year’s-worth of renter’s insurance is a way you can show your love and concern without interfering with their independence. It may not be as traditional as roses or chocolates, but it can wind up being a whole lot more important in terms of financial protection down the road.

Of course when it comes to Valentine’s Day gift ideas, jewelry, flowers and chocolates are just the tip of the iceberg. Here are a few other Valentine’s Day gift ideas that may be more up your alley:

  • Tickets to a concert or sporting event
  • Electronics – everything from a new cellphone to Bluetooth headphones
  • Clothing, especially related to a favorite sports team or cozy pajamas
  • Gift certificate to a spa for a massage or facial
  • Dinner reservations for the two of you or your sweetheart and his or her best friend
  • Homemade meal (and don’t forget to do the dishes, too)

Whatever gift you choose for Valentine’s Day, take the time to make sure the gift reflects your own love and devotion. Those are the best gifts of all.
